History


Senator Luigi Anderlini (pictured left) believed that a diffused knowledge about security and conflicts is an primary condition for achieving peace. So, in 1982, he founded in Rome the IRIAD, with a group of people involved in culture and social fields. He was first IRIAD president until his death in 2001. 

He wanted to create an autonomous and independent center, in order to make documentation, information, education and training on peace and security issues.

The first office was in Torre Argentina St., where a Library was established. In the same year the first issue of SIS magazine (Sistema Informativo a Schede in ITA) was published. It was entitled "Conscientious objection in Italy" (Nov. 1982). 

In 1986, International Year of Peace, journalist prize "Golden doves for peace" was created from idea of Fabrizio Battistelli and Corrado Cirio. It has the support of Legacoop and other cooperatives. The aim is to stimulate information operators and institutions to the ideals of peaceful coexistence. In the right picture Sandro Pertini, first Jury President of the Prize, salutes Fabrizio Battistelli, IRIAD General Secretary since 1982 and IRIAD President since 2009. From 1989 to 2012, the Jury was chaired by Rita Levi-Montalcini (pictured below with Giuliana Sgrena).

In the nineties the IRIAD has created two installations: the atomic Hourglass and the Obelisk of light, set up in various locations including Rome, Perugia and the Republic of San Marino, to communicate the destruction of nuclear warheads following the Russia-US agreements

In 1998 it was legally recognized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

IRIAD has supported the political actions for a law on the control of Italian exports of conventional arms. The goal was achived in 1990 (L. 9 July 1990 n. 185). It adheres to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.

In the following years, the website and the database "Disarmament online"  were realized, offering a wide overview of the disarmament and conflicts in the world. 

Ivano BarberiniIvano Barberini (pictured left) served as president from 2003 to 2009. During this years, IRIAD has been engaged in the establishment of the Italian Network for Disarmament between organizations working in the field of disarmament, industrial conversion and the import/export of armaments.

Maurizio Simoncelli (on the right) is IRIAD co-founder and from 2011 he assumed the position of Vice-President. At the Ediesse publisher cure the book series "Materials of Peace" and directs the SIS (IRIAD magazine online). 

In 2013, IRIAD'Library became cultural center for the City of Rome and has been federated in the Municipal Library Association. In the same year, the Institue has been recognized as a cultural institute by the Region Lazio.

In 2014, IRIAD has also participated in the establishment of the Italian Network of Peace

The IRIAD, in addition to expanding its research activities, since 2000 is engaged in education and training. From 2008 it held annually in Novafeltria (Rimini) Summer School of Peace, one classroom of students and teachers.
