The XXXIII Edition of the Prize Archivio Disarmo-Golden Doves for peace will take place in Rome on the 10th of October. The Prize is annually awarded to journalists and international personalities involved in promoting peace, nonviolent conflicts management and international cooperation.

This year the jury - composed by Fabrizio Battistelli, Dora Iacobelli, RIccaro Iacona, Dacia Maraini, Andrea Riccardi and Tana de Zulueta – has awarded the Prize for the journalists section to: Lucia Goracci reporter of RaiNews24, Italian State channel, who has been reporting for many years the contemporary conflicts on the most dangerous conflict zones; Nancy Porsia, freelance from Tunisi who has described the civil war in Libia and the migratory routes in the Mediterranean; Michele Rech “Zerocalcare” who by his graphic novels has brought the most complex international issues, near to young people.

The International Golden Doves for Peace 2017 is awarded to ICAN – International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.

Newadays, the world is deeply concerned with the North-Korean crisis that, without a political vision, can rapidly develop into an unimaginable cataclysm. Although some responsibilities are undeniable such as the aggressiveness of the Kim Jong-un regime and the inertia of the international community in the last 25 years (when the diplomacy was still able to stop the illegal acquisition of nuclear weapons by North-Korea), the basic and unsolved problem remains the availability of nuclear technology that is a sword of Damocles hanging over humanity.

On the 7th of July 2017 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons with 122 votes in favor, 1 against and 1 abstained. Four U.E. Member States voted in favor (Austria, Ireland, Malta and Sweden), while the rest of them did not vote. The signature from the single States, started on September 20th and has reached today the number of 53. The Treaty will enter into force when 50 Parliaments will ratify the signatures of their governments.

The Italian novelist Dacia Maraini, locked up in a Japanese concentration camp, saw the Hiroshima survivors with her own eyes. She presents the decision of the Jury to award ICAN - International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons affirming: “We must all work, as citizens and individuals, to stop nuclear weapons. Many countries do not want to renounce to this instrument of destruction, even though it could have disastrous and self-destructive consequences.”

Andrea Riccardi, founder of Sant’Egidio Community and a member of Jury the Prize, comments: “Again, after many decades, the ghost of a nuclear war is coming back. An isolated and impervious nation, the North-Korean, could provoke a nuclear disaster. What can we do? War is never the only solution. There are China and Russia, there is the concert of nations: the so called “red telephone” that, during the Cold War, allowed to communicate should be renewed in order in crises times.

Taking into consideration the continuous provocations of Kim-Jong-un, the influent Italian journalist Riccardo Iacona, member of the Jury concludes: “The time has come to wake up and to rebuild the wide pacifist front that starting from the ‘60s has been the most important protagonist of the end of the Cold War. Let’s keep moving, before it will be too late”.

Archivio Disarmo organizes the Prize trough the support of cooperatives belonging to LEGACOOP.
